About Richter Arts - Our Services, Mission, and History
Since its inception in 1971, the Stanley L. Richter Association for the Arts has hosted some of the most interesting events of the Danbury area cultural scene. These include lawn arts festivals, lectures, ethnic performances, and both classical and popular musical presentations.
Each autumn, area artists exhibit their works in Richter's most prestigious event, the Annual Juried Art Show, to compete for large cash prizes.
Our programs are supported by grants from the Danbury Cultural Commission, corporate and individual sponsorships, audience admissions, and members' dues.
An enthusiastic Board of Directors, assisted by volunteers from the general membership, live up to the mandate provided by our mission. Nearly every weekend during the spring and fall, these dedicated individuals dish up a tempting cultural feast at Richter House for everyone's enjoyment.
Our Mission
The Association's mission, as explained by Irving Mahl, first president of Richter Arts, is to promote cultural affairs "in the broadest possible definition to include the visual arts, music, drama, handicrafts, dance, poetry, creative writing and all other activities that enrich the lives of civilized people."
The History of Richter Arts
The Richter property, which includes the Arts Center and the golf course, was once a working farm. Bought in 1937 by Mr. and Mrs. Richter as a country home, the farm supplied fresh milk and eggs to the town each morning.
But the house itself was a center for artistic activity. Artists and musicians were welcomed and many a performance was given in the gracious salon.
In 1968, the property was donated to the city by the widowed Mrs. Irene Richter as a memorial to her husband. Danbury businessman, Mr. Martens Goos, organized the steering committee which would establish the Stanley L. Richter Association for the Arts in 1971, a fitting legacy from a couple who were devoted to the arts and to the city of Danbury.
